The Chard Wheelers Youth Stage Race will take place this weekend on Saturday 27th June at RNAS Merryfield, Ilton, Somerset.

Stage 1  Individual Time Trial  3.3 miles

Stage 2  Points Race               8 miles

Stage 3  Road Race                10 miles

Stage 1  Individual Time Trial 1 mile

Stage 2 Points Race  C 5 miles / 5 laps

D 3 miles / 3 laps

E 2 miles / 2 laps

Info for Riders

Youth A/B Stage 1 Time Trial 3.3 miles Stage 2 Points Race (6 laps / 6 miles) Stage 3 Road Race (3 laps / 9.9 miles) Stage 1 & 3 on perimeter circuit, stage 2 on inner circuit. Overall positions will be determined by awarding points from 10 – 1 for the first 10 boys and girls on each stage Riders must use standard road biles for all stages with no disc or deep section (50mm+) wheels allowed.

Clip on extensions and TT helmets will be permitted for stage 1 only.

Stage 1

Youth C/D/E Stage 1 Time Trial 1 mile

Stage 2 Points Race (2 laps E, 3 laps D, 4 laps C)

Stage 3 Road Race (2 laps E, 3 laps D, 4 laps C) All stages to be on inner circuit.

Standard road bikes only with no disc, deep section (50mm+) wheels, tri bars or aero / TT helmets allowed.

Overall positions will be determined by awarding points from 3 – 1 for the first 3 boys and girls in each age category on each stage. Race timings will be determined by the speed each race is completed throughout the day.

Spring Circuit Races

spring_circuits1st Chard Wheelers promotes its popular Spring Circuit races on Saturday 14th March for all categories at lovely spring like Merryfield Airfield, Ilton Somerset. With almost 150 entries across all the races it looks like there will be some good early season racing, and the first opportunity for the regions youth riders to test their legs.

The gate will be open from 8.30am

9.45am Youth C/D/E (Under 12 , under 10 and under 8s)
10.15am Youth A / B (Under 16 and under 14)
11.00am Category 4 (Regional C+)
11.05am Women (E/1/2/3/4 National B)
12.00pm E/1/2/3 (National B)
12.02pm Category 3 / 4 (Regional B)

Please remember Merryfield is an active military airfield, so signing in at the gate is compulsory; do not leave litter, and do not discard gel or bar wrappers when racing.

Failure to do so could put future events in jeopardy, and this is over 30 race or training days in 2015 alone.

Awards Dinner

1st Chard Wheelers held their Annual Awards night and dinner at Horton Village Hall last Saturday. A very sociable and fun evening was highlighted by Chris Opie, an Elite professional rider from Cornwall, presenting the Trophies to the recipients.


Chris, who has won many national level races and is also a winner of a stage of The Tour Of Britain, also hosted a lively and entertaining question and answer session.  Continue Reading →
